The UK should establish a system of scientific officers to review the design of clinical trials in the NHS, prior to submission for ethical approval. This is one of the recommendations issued this week by the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on the Operation of NHS Research Ethics Committees, in a drive to "ensure that applications for good quality research are reviewed consistently, promptly and efficiently".
