Executive Summary
CAS Medical Systems has filed a 510(k) marketing application to sell a cerebral oximeter that uses its near infrared spectroscopy technology. The Branford, Connecticut firm expects to commercialise the device in the second half of 2006. NIRS is a noninvasive, optical-based technique that monitors the level of oxygen in the brain. It is designed to help doctors prevent the onset of neurological injury caused by oxygen-deprivation that can occur during cardiac surgery, carotid surgery and neurosurgery. CAS Medical said that the device could also be used as a clinical monitor for neuro-intensive care and for stroke and cardiac patients. Clinica FILED 1 June 2005 COPYRIGHT T&F Informa UK Ltd 2005
