Executive Summary
Brazil performed 10,920 organ transplants in 2004, an increase of 36% on 2002, when it performed just under 8,000. The increase has been recorded in almost all of the 21 states that provide the service. Corneal transplants, which last year totalled 5,335, registered the highest growth, at 52.6%. Brazil, which claims to have the world's largest national organ transplants service, is expecting to further increase this activity in 2005. Early data suggest that around 2,600 transplants were carried out in the first quarter.
