Executive Summary
Canada has pledged an extra Can$10m (US$8m) to establish six National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) for public health. They will be used as bridges between healthcare stakeholders to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the country's healthcare system. Four out of the five Canadian regions will each oversee different healthcare sectors. For example, Ontario NCC in central Canada will facilitate better use of and access to information, and improve the decision making capacity of policy, programme and professionals in the healthcare system; and Manitoba NCC of the prairie provinces will focus on training emerging infectious disease specialists. The 2004-05 federal budget of Can$250,000 per centre will bring the centres into operational mode.
