Executive Summary
The European electromedical equipment industry association, COCIR, says that it supports the adoption of an EU directive on Computer Implemented Inventions (CIIs). The aim of the directive would be to harmonise rules for patents on such inventions, granting patents on CIIs, but not on individual pieces of software. CIIs, COCIR explains, are a defined combination of hard and software which make a genuine contribution of their own and innovative medical equipment is increasingly dependent on CIIs. The directive would define under which conditions patents could be granted, thus defining a clear relationship between inventors and users of the invention.
