Executive Summary
The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis has withdrawn Senegal's $7.1m five-year grant to tackle malaria. Citing "systemic issues that resulted in poor performance" against initial two-year targets, the decision constitutes the Global Fund's first formal discontinuation and is encouraging the country to re-apply. Senegal was part of the first ever round of phase 1 evaluations conducted by the Global Fund. Another 21, with a value of $119m, were approved for a second three-year phase; three grants remain under review. The Global Fund currently has $3.1bn in phase-1 grants in 127 countries.
