Spanish group pushes for cochlear implants boost:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The Spanish cochlear implants association (AICE) is calling for greater awareness and recognition of the value of the technology and the funding needed to widen access to it. The cost of implanting a single device is fully reimbursed by the Spanish social security, but a significant number of people who are unaware of how to access the technology could benefit from it, AICE argues. The association is also striving for similar financial support for the maintenance of the device and for a second implantation, so as to enable the patient to hear through both ears. Some 3,600 people in Spain have received a cochlear implant over the last 20 years, according to AICE.
