Executive Summary
Australian minister for ageing Julie Bishop is to release Aus$52.2m (US$41.2m) to fund the first of a three-phase initiative targeting dementia. The funding is part of a Aus$200m four-year package called "Dementia - a national health priority". This phase of funding will support: the primary health sector, including GPs, for diagnosis and management of dementia; mapping and consolidation of existing research; innovative dementia care and treatment; and awareness strategies for prevention or early intervention. Annually, the government provides more than Aus$2.6bn to dementia care programmes to support those with the disease, who number approximately 176,000.
