UK scientists call for £100 million UK stem cell fund:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

UK scientists and entrepreneurs are calling for the creation of a charitable Stem Cell Foundation to ensure that commercial enterprise matches the investment and know-how that is putting the UK at the forefront of the technology. A £100m ($186m) fund would help cement that leadership, said bioscientist and venture-capitalist Professor Sir Chris Evans, chairman of Merlin Bioscience, who presented the idea at a meeting of stem cell experts at the Centre for Life, in Newcastle, this week. The technology is seen as being at the heart of the future revolution that regenerative medicine will bring - as such, it is being compared to penicillin and scanners, as examples of medical developments that the UK has failed to exploit commercially.
