Executive Summary
There were 60 deaths from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in the UK in 2004, pushing the cumulative total past the 1,000 mark since DoH records began in 1990. At nine deaths last year specifically related to variant CJD, the number of fatalities has halved since 2003 and has declined steadily since a rise in the late 1990s peaked in 2000 at 28. The total stands at 148. At the end of last week, the overall death toll from CJD stood at 1,025. Six cases of definite or probable vCJD are still alive (February 4).
