Executive Summary
Luis Gomes Sambo has been appointed regional director for the World Health Organization African Region (WHO/AFRO), for a period of five years, beginning February 1. Dr Sambo succeeds Dr Ebrahim Malick Samba, who is retiring after two terms. The former Angolan vice-minister of health's priorities will be the major health issues affecting the entire region, namely: the high prevalence of communicable diseases, especially of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; the growing burden of non-communicable diseases; and the high levels of maternal and infant mortality. AFRO is one of the WHO's six regional offices, with 46 member states.
