Executive Summary
Rita Medical Systems has received US FDA 510(k) clearance to sell a laparoscopic version of its Habib 4X resection device for coagulating tissue during cancer surgery. The radiofrequency ablation-based product, which is used to coagulate a surgical resection plane, facilitates a fast dissection with limited blood loss, claimed the Fremont, California firm. US shipments of the device are expected to take place in the second half of the fourth quarter of 2006, when Rita Medical also plans to CE-mark, and start selling, the product in Europe. A non-laparoscopic version of the device has been commercially available since the third quarter of 2005. The laparoscopic device incorporates technology licensed by Rita Medical from UK firm EMcision.
