Executive Summary
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is the subject of the first in a series of service commissioning guides being produced for the UK NHS. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is due to publish five web-based guides by the end of this year. They will not constitute formal NICE guidance - though will be underpinned by existing technology guidelines - and aim to inform commissioners on service benchmarks, requirements and costs. The other four will cover: diabetic foot care, anticoagulation therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation for COPD and assisted-discharge schemes for COPD.
