Executive Summary
Monitor, the UK's independent regulator of National Health Service foundation trusts (NHSFTs), has approved the creation of another three. The South London & Maudsley, Tavistock & Portman and University Hospital of South Manchester NHSFTs bring the total to 52. With annual revenues totalling £10.3bn ($19.6bn), FTs now represent "well over a quarter of acute and specialist trust provision" in England, said the DoH. Health minister Patricia Hewitt welcomed the latest authorisations as underlining the government's "commitment to the foundation model as the model for trusts in the future that will be rolled out across the NHS".
