Executive Summary

A new high-resolution monochrome liquid crystal display (LCD) module particularly suitable for digital mammography applications has been announced in Japan by NEC LCD Technologies. The 21.3-inch (54 cm) display has a resolution of 2,800 x 2,100 pixels and can display up to 3,070 shades of grey without the need for interpolation algorithms. In addition, it achieves a luminance of 1,000cd/m2 with a contrast ratio of 1,000:1, making it particularly suitable for distinguishing microscopic calcification in mammograms, which is often an initial symptom of breast cancer. According to NEC, the display fills an important gap in the market for medical monitors and offers monitor manufacturers reduced development costs and shortened product development cycles.
