Executive Summary
Contrary to perceived wisdom, cerebral angiography is safe for use in children with suspected strokes, brain tumours or other cerebrovascular diseases, a study has shown. The study, reported in the October 2006 issue of Stroke, analysed 241 cerebral angiography procedures carried out in 205 children at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, Maryland between 1999 and 2006. There was one fatality among those studied, attributed to a cerebral haemorrhage that occurred before the patient reached hospital, but there were no reports of blood clots at the catheter puncture site, leg pain or difficulty in walking during an average follow-up of 28 months.
