Executive Summary
The UK's Department of Health is enabling people with long-term health and social care needs to self-assess their equipment requirements. A series of 11 pilot schemes launched last week will help determine the feasibility of self-assessment. A number of the pilots will focus on groups in the community whose needs can be more difficult to meet, such as in rural areas. Until now such needs have been assessed by the local social services. The programme will run until September 2007.
