This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The UK Department of Trade and Industry has published draft regulations and guidance to implement the EU's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/EC). The texts are open for consultation until October 17 2006. The deadline for implementation of the Directive was August 13 2005, but the consultation sets out that the UK will not implement the main provisions until July 1, 2007 (although the regulations themselves will come into force on January 1 2007). The deadline for approval of producer compliance schemes operating in the first compliance period (April 1-December 31 2007) will be February 28 2007. The final deadline for producers to register with producer compliance schemes will be March 15 2007.
