Executive Summary
David Nicholson was today appointed as the new chief executive of the UK's National Health Service. The handover from the acting chief executive (since March 2006), Sir Ian Carruthers, is provisionally planned for September. Mr Nicholson will continue in his current position as chief executive of NHS London until the handover. He has 25 years experience of working within the NHS. He will now join chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson and acting permanent secretary Hugh Taylor in leading and managing the Department of Health.
