Executive Summary
The UK has published revised Regulations on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS), which implement the EU RoHS Directive, 2002/95, and will come into force on July 1 2006. The RoHS Regulations, which are being enacted in many EU states concurrently, prohibit the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and certain types of brominated flame retardant in new electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), subject to certain exemptions. All relevant EEE placed on the market as of July 1 will need to be compliant with the new Regulations, with the main responsibility for achieving compliance lying with manufacturers, importers and own-labellers.
