There remains much controversy over whether Bulgaria and Romania need closer monitoring before they are allowed to become EU members. While the accession date for these countries is still January 2007 at present, some current EU members are concerned at the two countries' records in dealing with aspects such as corruption and crime. There is talk of a one-year postponement for in entry for both countries, although another option may be for Brussels to continue monitoring them after their accessions.
