Executive Summary
2004 data published this month by the German federal statistics office show that the number of inpatients that year stood at 17.3 million, and that the average length of hospital stay was 8.6 days. The inpatient number was down by 0.4% in absolute terms, and by 2.9%, if healthy newborns are excluded from the statistics. The latter totalled 444,000 in 2004. There were 7.8 million male inpatients and 9.1 million woman treated on an inpatient basis in 2004. Among males, alcohol-related injuries and conditions accounted for 218,000 admissions and ischaemic heart disease for 198,000 cases. Among women, there were 146,000 cases of gallstones.
