Seven of the 11 suspected cases of avian flu in Azerbaijan, of which five were fatal, have today been confirmed as due to H5N1 infection. After onsite testing by the US NAMRU-3 unit, based in Cairo, confirmatory testing was performed in the UK. The global WHO-confirmed cases (pending confirmation of one Egyptian case) now total 184, with 103 deaths.
