Bahrain is currently reviewing a draft law to establish an autonomous medical council which would eliminate medical errors and improve and enhance therapeutic and ethical standards in the country's public and private medical institutions and pharmacies. The duties of the new body will include: regulating the yearly renewal of licences for private clinics and pharmacies; setting standards for new institutions; setting quality standards for medical centres; monitoring performance-cost ratios; evaluation of performance; taking action against standards or costs violations; and taking action on patient complaints and suggestions.
