China funds sexually transmitted infections study in Henan province:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The Chinese ministries of science & technology and health are funding a study to determine more accurately the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The study will be conducted on 200 male homosexual volunteers and will aim to improve knowledge about the spread of STIs in this group of people. Henan is likely to be worst hit by AIDS because of an illegal plasma collection scheme in the mid-1990s, which, due to lax hygiene standards, led to a serious spread of the infection. Official figures for the number of confirmed cases of HIV/AIDS in China is around 130,000, but the real figure is thought to be more than 800,000.
