Executive Summary
Ontario has launched a new cataract centre of excellence in Toronto. The Kensington Eye Institute will perform 5,000 new routine cataract surgeries annually and will take on 1,700 procedures from four Toronto acute care teaching hospitals. These hospitals - the University Health Network, Mount Sinai Hospital, St Michael's Hospital and the Sunnybrook and Women's Hospital - will then focus on more complex eye surgeries. The centre will also be a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility containing the latest technology. The government will provide it with operating funds of around Can$5m (US$4.2m) annually.
