Executive Summary
Becton Dickinson's BD Diagnostics unit has received US FDA 510(k) market clearance for its robotics-based in vitro molecular testing system for infectious diseases. The Viper system incorporates a multi-jointed (4-axis) robotic arm that automates the laborious process of pipetting; incubations, amplification and detection also all occur on the system. The technology is designed to greatly improve laboratory efficiency and help address acute labour shortages, said the Franklin Lakes, New Jersey firm.
