This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

NHS primary care in England will have an extra £5.6bn ($11.4bn) to spend in 2008-09, with a 5.5% (£3.84bn) increase in recurrent revenue allocations and a £1.7bn non-recurrent budget announced yesterday by the Department of Health. These increases bring the annual primary care budget to £74.2bn - this is 82% of the total NHS revenue budget, up from 72% in 1996-97. The overall NHS budget is planned to rise to £110bn by 2010-11. Health minister Alan Johnson also unveiled the NHS Operating Framework for 2008-09, the key aims of which are: tighter hospital-acquired infection controls; better access to general practice services; achieving the 18-week referral-to-treatment target; and strengthening pandemic flu preparedness.
