Philips is to acquire Emergin, a Boca Raton, Florida-based company specialising in medical alarm systems for hospitals. On joining Philips' patient monitoring division, Emergin will benefit from the Dutch electronics group's international presence and be able to grow beyond its current North Americian base. Sales of Emergin's alarm management and event notification software is designed to transmit critical patient information to the right care giver on standard personal communications devices, such as wireless phones, pagers and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The company has seen sales grow 50% each year over the last three years - in 2007, it recorded a turnover of $18m.
