Developing India's nascent emergency care system was the subject of discussions held in the US this week between former Indian president Abdul Kalam and physicians at the Stanford University School of Medicine (California). The collaboration between Stanford and India's Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI - Andhra Pradesh) began this summer with an agreement to train 150 paramedics and 30 paramedic instructors over the next two years. The development of a "911-type emergency response system" for India began in 2005 (see Clinica No 1163, p 13) and is also the focus of a number of private hospitals across the country (see Clinica No 1156, p 14).
