Abbott sends worldwide alert over glucose meters:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Abbott has cautioned its customers worldwide that a number of recently manufactured glucose meters may fail to generate blood glucose results if dropped on a hard surface. The affected devices - which include the brands Precision Xtra, Optium, ReliOn Ultima, Rite Aid, and Kroger - had been manufactured after January 31 2007. Internal product testing found that if the meter was dropped on a hard surface, part of the display can be jarred or disconnected, making it difficult to read the lot number or date information, or causing the screen to go blank. No associated injuries to patients have been reported to date. The company advised its users to keep the glucose meters in the wallet provided for additional protection.
