Executive Summary
In the month to August 1, Chile's AUGE (universal healthcare access with explicit guarantees) programme provided care to almost 27,000 patients of cases involving the 16 conditions that gained coverage on July 1, taking the total to 56 (see Clinica No 1264, p 3). The vast majority of cases, just over 20,000, were for emergency dental surgery; of the remainder, almost 1,100 were for hearing aids; others included cataract and gastric surgery. All but 283 patients (those covered by private contribution schemes, ISAPREs) were covered by the national health insurance fund, Fonasa. AUGE is cofinanced by the state and the private health insurance sector.
