Leading EU scientists have called on member states to remove political and legislative barriers to stem cell research, in the belief that differences in policy "seriously hinder [its] advancement", particularly with regard to international collaboration and sharing biomedical knowledge. Despite the common funding provided for this under the European Commission's FP-6 and FP-7 research frameworks, "scientists within Europe cannot freely exchange personnel and cell lines", said ESTOOLS consortium co-ordinator Professor Peter Andrews.
