Executive Summary
CT-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) proved 100% successful in eradicating small malignant kidney tumours in a study by researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A total of 125 tumours, measuring 0.6 to 8.8cm, in 104 patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were treated between 2000 and 2006. Of 95 tumours that were smaller than 3.7cm, all were completely eradicated by a single treatment. 21 of the 30 tumours larger than 3.7cm were also destroyed in the trial, giving a 93% overall success rate for large and small tumours. The findings appear in the August issue of The American Journal of Roentgenology.
