Executive Summary
LED Dental has received US FDA 510(k) clearance to expand the indications for its VELscope oral cancer screening system to help detect lesions that may not be visible under traditional white light examinations - including precancerous and cancerous growths - and to help determine surgical margins. The device, which was previously cleared by the FDA in 2006 for oral mucosal examination, is used by a dentist or healthcare provider as an adjunct to traditional examination by incandescent light. It uses a narrow band of high-energy blue light and specialised filter technology, said the firm, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vancouver, Canada-based LED Medical Diagnostics.
