A significant financial boost of Can$114m (US$100m) - Can$13m of which are one-time operating funds - has been provided by the state government of Ontario to complete the state-of-the-art Brampton Civic Hospital. The facility, which has been in development since 2004 and is expected to be one of Ontario's best hospitals, is due to open at the end of 2007. The hospital will have an emergency department to accommodate 90,000 annual visits, and there will be a doubling of ambulatory care capacity for the area from 242,000 visits per year in 2006 to 400,000 in 2011-12. Its bed capacity will increase incrementally - starting with 479 (including 62 for emergency care), increasing to 527 in 2009-10, 570 in 2010-11 and 608 in 2011-12. The state government had provided funds of Can$18.9m for the project in 2006.
