Executive Summary
Michel Kazatchkine has been appointed executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, effective April 1 2007. Professor Kazatchkine, a medical doctor and global health expert, currently serves as France's ambassador for HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases; he is a former vice-chair of the Geneva, Switzerland-based Global Fund's board and first chair of the technical review panel that assesses the quality of grant proposals - to date, projects worth US$7bn have been approved. He replaces Sir Richard Feachem, the founding executive director, who steps down at the end of his five-year term.
