US Medicare's fiscal 2009 proposals for the hospital inpatient prospective payment systems (IPPS) for operating and capital-related costs, issued on April 14, will result in an increase in Medicare payments to acute care hospitals of nearly $4bn. The changes would apply to more than 3,500 hospitals paid under the IPPS, effective from October 1 2008.
