The European Parliament has given its approval to the creation of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. It aims to become a flagship for excellence in European innovative to face the challenges of globalisation by harnessing and integrating higher education, research and business-innovation. The next stage will involve appointing the governing board between, now and June 2008, and establishing two or three "knowledge and innovation communities (KICs)" - highly integrated public-private networks of universities, research organisations and business. The board members will be officially named this June, but it is likely to take some 18 months before the first KICs are chosen.
