Health Canada clears Zargis' Cardioscan

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Zargis Medical's Cardioscan has been cleared for sale in Canada. The software, which analyses cardiac sounds to help identify and classify suspected heart murmurs, connects wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled electronic stethoscope. It can help physicians to determine which patients should be referred to echocardiography and which should not – these tests are conclusive, but very expensive. Stamford, Connecticut-based Zargis plans to launch the product immediately in Canada. The software, along with 3M's Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3200, received Popular Science magazine's "innovation of the year" award in November. Cardioscan was cleared by the US FDA in 2004.
