Executive Summary
Biotech firm Life Technologies (Carlsbad, California) is to strengthen its portfolio of PCR genotyping products by purchasing BioTrove, a gene expression specialist. The deal will provide Life Technologies with BioTrove’s OpenArray platform, which it describes as a “high-throughput gene expression and genotyping analysis system based on a flexible array format that enables researchers to perform more than 3,000 PCR genotyping or qPCR gene expression assays at a time”. Life Technologies’ Applied Biosystems subsidiary previously commercialised the OpenArray system after collaborating with BioTrove in 2007. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. However, Life Technologies did say that it expects the deal to not have a material impact on its financials in fiscal 2009.
