Executive Summary
Spain's transplants commission has today approved an emergency face transplant. The operation, to be performed at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebrn hospital, will be the first of its kind in Spain, where a further two face transplants have been approved but not yet carried out. To date, only seven such procedures have been performed worldwide, Clinica understands: four in France, two in the US, and one in China. The go-ahead by the transplants commission, which is part of the "interterritorial council" of devolved regional healthcare authorities, was made following the approval of the case by the national transplants organisation (ONT).
