Executive Summary
The US FDA has approved St Jude Medical's Cool Point irrigation pump via a premarket approval (PMA) supplement. It is designed to help electrophysiologists perform catheter ablation therapy, where normal heart rhythm is restored in patients with atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. The pump was developed for use with St Jude's IBI-1500T9-CP cardiac ablation generator and Therapy Cool Path irrigated catheters, and supplies a continuous flow of saline through the catheter's inner lumen to cool the ablation electrode. St Paul, Minnesota-based St Jude CE marked the Cool Point pump for sale in Europe in January 2008 (see Clinica No 1293, p 26).
