No one should be allowed to use sophisticated medical equipment without the necessary training and without passing a test of competence in its use. That is the view of the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ), contained in a report on the safety in use of medical devices, published today. Too little is being done to ensure patient safety, it argues, citing evidence of deaths and serious incidents due to human error in medical equipment use and maintenance.
