Executive Summary
Second-quarter sales of Fort Worth, Texas-headquartered Alcon's ophthalmic surgical products increased faster than its pharmaceutical and consumer eyecare products. The growth in its surgical business was driven by strong sales of its premium, advanced technology intraocular lenses, in particular the AcrySof Toric and AcrySof ReSTOR Aspheric lenses. Sales of cataract and vitrectomy products, which went up 16% from the same period last year, also contributed to the growth. Alcon's laser vision correction franchise saw a three-fold increase in revenue, thanks to its acquisition of German refractive laser system developer Wavelight in November 2007.
