FDA clearance for BrainLAB's dose algorithm

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The Monte Carlo dose calculation algorithm software developed by BrainLAB has received 510(k) clearance from the US FDA. The device uses the Monte Carlo method, a computational algorithm, to calculate doses of ionising radiation for use in radiosurgery. The software uses a 3D CT-scan of the patient's tissue to create an internal model of the patient and to calculate the dose distribution of the radiation emitted by a linear accelerator. The present implementation is designed to model photon radiation. Westchester, Illinois-based BrainLAB claims that the Monte Carlo algorithm is the "gold standard" for treatment planning accuracy, and contends that its software will help make high-precision treatment available in everyday clinical practice.
