Aus grants US$18m for radiation oncology unit in NT

Executive Summary

Funding for a new radiation oncology unit to be set up on the Royal Darwin Hospital site to serve Australia’s Northern Territory has been granted. The provider of the Darwin-based service is to be the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), which will be responsible for ordering the linear accelerator machines and other specialised equipment for the facility, which will have an initial capacity to treat 400 patients per year. The total investment by the federal government into the unit is Aus$19m (US$18m); the availability of Aus$5.7m of the total amount, to commence work on the unit, was confirmed in June 2008. Construction of the site began on July 18. The agreement with the RAH will be finalised in August and will be to provide the service for 10 years.
