CDC grants for new infection strategies

This article was originally published in The Gray Sheet

Executive Summary

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is soliciting grant proposals focusing, in part, on device and diagnostic interventions that would reduce hospital acquired infections in intensive care patients, central-line bloodstream infections, and the incidence of invasive methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infections. CDC will award four grants worth up to $2 million each through its Prevention Epicenters Program, with a Sept. 30 deadline to apply. Catheter and catheter connector use, design and maintenance are among CDC's proposed areas of focus. At least one possible project would explore the effectiveness of various cleansing agents and techniques in reducing microbial contamination in catheter connectors and central venous catheters
