Medicare agency's Physician Quality Reporting Initiative continues to gain ground, encouraging providers to follow quality guidelines by paying out more than $92 million in incentives to physicians in 2008, compared to the $36 million it paid in 2007. According to a Nov. 13 CMS release, over 85,000 physicians received payments last year; the maximum payment to individual professionals is set at $98,000. The quality improvement incentives are authorized through 2010 under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act. CMS has designated 153 quality measures for 2009
