Physician-geneticist Francis S. Collins, President Obama's choice to direct the National Institutes of Health, is an expert on and ambitious proponent of personalized medicine, as showcased by his latest book, The Language of Life: DNA and the Revolution in Personalized Medicine (due to be published in 2010). Collins directed NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute from 1993-2008, which resulted in the mapping of the human genome and helped usher in the era of personalized medicine.
